Grade II Listed
The Plaza Super Cinema, Mersey Square, Stockport was built in 1932 and is an Art Deco, Grade II* Listed Building. Designed by W Thornley of Wigan for use as a cinema, it opened its doors in 1933. The cinema has been left unused for some years recently which may have accelerated much of the deterioration that Aura were contracted to repair.
Aura Conservation were commissioned to initially carry out a full conditional survey of the external façade to establish the extent of the damage. The work formed part of a £3million restoration and refurbishment scheme and comprised the thorough cleaning, repair, reinstatement and re-pointing of the main white faience façade to Mersey Square. Localised areas of corroded steelwork were cut out, cleaned and repaired. The cleaning, repair and re-pointing of the brick facades was also carried out to the side and rear elevations and the repair of sandstone and lime render detail at high level.
Significant time was spent in the selection of the replacement faience and repair resins to ensure correct colour matching and finish. Aura took an active role in the initial inspection and scheduling of the replacement blocks (600 were required in total).
The scheme was nominated for and achieved a number of awards:
